NORBURY BROADBAND COMMUNITY
(Nobco)
| Our Mission | A self-help user community filling in a broadband "notspot" by operating shared access to a BT Broadband service using radio equipment donated by QiComm Ltd. The network was originally established by QiComm under the Access Broadband brand using a start up grant from Advantage West Midlands (the local Regional Development Board) to bring broadband to those parts of the region not served by BT. However, they were unable to operate the service profitably and withdrew at the end of March 2010. They have generously donated the equipment and provided extensive technical support to enable local groups to take over operation of the service. With generous support and goodwill from local relay operators, and freed from the expensive overheads of a large company, the economics become much more attractive. |
| Service status | So far the service has proven to be reliable, with just one minor blip due to BT reconfiguring the system, resulting in a patchy service for a few hours until corrected. All users are enabled with a speed of at least 2 Mbps download speed and 256 kbps upload. These may be increased gradually once we gain more experience of how hard we can push it, but even 2 Mbps is two to four times faster than most of us had access to originally. We will start to add new users during June now that we have had a couple of months stable operation to test the basic system operation. |
